Job Description

The Department of Music at Rhodes College invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor position of Instrumental Activities/Music Technology and Composition to begin in August of 2018. Rhodes College is especially interested in attracting candidates from historically underrepresented groups and/or those with demonstrated commitment to working with diverse and historically underrepresented populations. The successful candidate will have a terminal degree in instrumental conducting or composition. Preference will be given to candidates whose creative practices include some of the following: teaching in Songwriting, Popular Music, Audio Engineering, Arts Entrepreneurship, and/or Ethnomusicology (African American Music in particular).

Successful candidates must also demonstrate a clear commitment to teaching and scholarship at a liberal arts college and will be expected to maintain an active program of scholarship (research and/or creative activity), which will be supported by start-up funds for scholarship and an office. Possibilities for additional support for scholarship include summer research funds and travel funds. Teaching responsibilities will include five courses a year. Candidates must have completed all requirements for a terminal degree in the appropriate areas of concentration by July 2018. Candidates with college teaching experience are preferred.

Founded in 1848, Rhodes College is a highly selective, private, residential, undergraduate college, located in Memphis, Tennessee. We aspire to graduate students with a lifelong passion for learning, a compassion for others, and the ability to translate academic study and personal concern into effective leadership and action in their communities and the world. We encourage applications from candidates interested in helping us achieve this vision.

Rhodes College values an inclusive and welcoming environment. We are an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity (http://www.rhodes.edu/content/rhodes-vision) in the workforce.

Memphis has a metropolitan population of over one million and provides multiple opportunities for research and for cultural and recreational activities.

Completed applications will include a letter of application, a statement of teaching philosophy, a plan for continued creative development, a curriculum vitae, copies of graduate and undergraduate transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. Please do NOT include supportive materials such as programs, recordings, or samples of your writing/compositions at this time.

Your application must also include a statement that addresses your interest in teaching at a liberal arts college and how your experiences with teaching, scholarship, and/or service might contribute to a college community that includes a commitment to diversity and inclusion as one of its core values.

Review of completed applications will begin January 12, 2018, and will continue until the position is filled. Candidates from backgrounds typically underrepresented in higher education are strongly encouraged to apply. The online application system will solicit letters of recommendation electronically from the candidate’s recommenders, once their contact information has been entered by the candidate and all other required application materials have been submitted. Submit all materials through the online application portal: https://jobs.rhodes.edu/. Background checks are required before candidates can be brought to campus for interviews.
