Job Description

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Rhodes College (Memphis, TN) invites applications for a tenure-track position as an assistant professor of French with a specialization in West African Francophone Studies, to begin in August 2018. Rhodes College is especially interested in attracting candidates from historically underrepresented groups and/or those with demonstrated commitment to working with diverse and historically underrepresented populations. The successful applicant will demonstrate strong evidence of scholarly excellence, will show a firm commitment to teaching foreign language at a liberal arts college, and possess native or near-native fluency in French.

Duties of the position include teaching and designing courses at all levels of the undergraduate French curriculum: introductory and intermediate French language courses to non-majors; courses in West African Studies in French for majors and minors; and courses in West African Francophone Studies in English translation. We seek a teacher-scholar who will collaborate on program-building and advise and mentor students. The teaching load is 3-2. Preference will be given to candidates whose research and teaching interests will diversify our curriculum in the area of Francophone Studies and contribute innovative approaches to French language teaching. Cross-listed courses and collaborations with one or more of Rhodes’s interdisciplinary programs, such as Africana Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Film and Media Studies, Urban Studies, and Educational Studies, are enthusiastically encouraged.

Applicants should hold or expect to receive the Ph.D. in French, Francophone Studies, or a closely related field by August 2018.

Founded in 1848, Rhodes College is a highly selective, private, residential, undergraduate college, located in Memphis, Tennessee. We encourage applications from candidates interested in helping us achieve this vision. Candidates from backgrounds typically underrepresented in higher education are strongly encouraged to apply.

Memphis has a metropolitan population of over one million and provides multiple opportunities for research and for cultural and recreational activities.

Please apply online at jobs.rhodes.edu; only online applications will be accepted. A complete application includes a cover letter, a CV, a statement of teaching philosophy, a recent writing sample, and three letters of recommendation. Please address in your cover letter your interest in teaching at a liberal arts college and how your experiences with teaching, scholarship, and/or service might contribute to a college community that includes a commitment to diversity as one of its core values. Review of completed applications will begin on November 15 and continue until the position is filled. The online application system will solicit letters of recommendation electronically from the candidate’s recommenders once their contact information has been entered by the candidate and the search committee requests them. Background checks are required before candidates can be brought to campus for interviews.
